Education & Certification (Licensing):
In order to practice, Denturists must be registered with the College of Denturist in Ontario. A certificate of registration or license is issued after a candidate has:
- graduated from the Denturist Program of a recognized Denturist teaching institution - which in Ontario is George Brown College, and
- successfully completed written and practical qualifying exams set by the College of Denturists of Ontario. The practical exam requires candidates to perform all the clinical and laboratory procedures to make and fit a test patient with a set of complete dentures. They must also demonstrate their ability to design and construct partial dentures and make repairs.
George Brown College teaches a demanding three year Denturist Program. The students are trained to examine and assess arches missing some or all teeth, to design, construct and fit removable dentures including repair or alteration. In addition, the students study general and oral health sciences.
Basic Science: General Anatomy & Physiology, Orofacial Anatomy, Microbiology & Infection Control
Dental Sciences: General & Dental Histology, Peridontology, Oral Pathology & Medicine, Dental Psychology, Gerontology, Pharmacology & Emergency Care
Health Promotion: Nutrition, Denturist Practice in the Community
Management: Ethics & Professional Responsibilities, Practice Management, Small Business Management, Computers
Denturist Practice: Dental Materials, Radiographic Pattern Recognition (X-ray interpretation), Prosthodontics, Removable Partial Dentures, Implant Dentures
George Brown College has a teaching Denture Clinic where the students are taught clinical prosthodontics. They make dentures for patients under the supervision of licensed Denturist instructors.
The students receive additional practical work experience through an internship (job placement in a denture clinic) during their last semester of study.
After completing the Denturist Program, students are skilled in identifying problems relating to general health as well as those directly relating to dentures.
Denturists study the clinical and technical aspects of removable dentures and general health for a full three years, more than any other oral health care practitioner. The College of Denturists of Ontario acknowledges that Denturists are "Denture Specialists".
Regulation of Denturism: Certified Denturists are registered with the College of Denturists of Ontario. There are approximately 450 active certified Denturists in Ontario.
The College of Denturists regulates the profession of Denturism. You should contact the College if you have questions regarding the scope of practice of Denturism or regulations governing the profession.
